BBC breakout comedy 'Small Prophets' is coming back for season two

8 September 2026 at 11:06
After a strong first season, and an Apple TV pickup, BBC comedy "Small Prophets" is returning for a second season and making the jump from BBC Two to BBC One.

The move to BBC One puts "Small Prophets" in front of a larger audience after its first season became the BBC's biggest new comedy of the year. The series debuted on BBC Two in February and has been compared to "Ted Lasso."

Season one follows Michael Sleep, whose partner Clea disappeared nearly a decade ago. An average man, Sleep's days are spent working in a DIY store, visiting his father, and hoping for Clea's return.

Teen Reading Slumps to Worst This Century Due to Surge in Screen Time

By: BeauHD
8 September 2026 at 11:00
Teen reading, math, and science scores have fallen to their lowest levels since international PISA testing began in 2000, with 15-year-olds now reading at roughly the level previously expected of students a year younger. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) linked weaker results to more screen time, less reading for pleasure, and digital distraction. It also found that students who regularly used AI chatbots for tasks like drafting essays and summarizing text scored about 20 points lower in science, roughly equivalent to a year of learning. Reuters reports: A 2012 reading high of 501 on PISA's index had declined to a score of 466 last year. The test is widely regarded as the world's leading gauge of educational performance and its results are closely scrutinized by governments and educators. "In reading, more screen time and less reading for pleasure have gone hand in hand with weaker results," OECD head Mathias Cormann told a press conference. "We're also seeing more hasty reading, students rushing through a text and giving a quick wrong answer." Reading scores fell more sharply in students from better-off backgrounds, the study added. Hindered by falling reading standards, average teenage science and maths skills were also at their lowest this century. Science fell from a 2009 high of 506 on the index to 486, while maths was down from 502 to 469 in the same period. East Asia was the best-performing region. Chinese cities that participated in the test, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan had the best educational systems with Britain and Estonia the only countries outside the region that made it into the top 10 in reading, mathematics and science.

GitHub - orange-groove/react-map-annotate: Draw on Mapbox, MapLibre, Google, Leaflet, or ArcGIS in React

I built an open-source React map drawing library because I got tired of fighting drawing controls that wanted to own the UI.

react-map-annotate lets your application control the drawing session. Put the toolbar in your sidebar, header, or command palette. Select tools, finish shapes, edit labels and colors, undo/redo, and persist annotations through React state.

It supports Mapbox, MapLibre, Google Maps, Leaflet, and ArcGIS through separate adapters, with a shared annotation model.

The goal is simple: the map should render the drawing, not dictate how your application works.

It includes freehand drawing, polygons, rectangles, circles, arrows, markers, text, and measurement tools, along with editing handles and a headless API.

The project is MIT licensed and available on npm. I’d love feedback from developers building GIS, field-service, site-planning, or other map-heavy applications—especially anyone who has had to work around existing drawing controls.

What would you need from a drawing library before using it in a production application?

I built a Laravel package to replay Stripe billing lifecycles offline

I built Cashier Dunning because testing failed-payment flows in Laravel is surprisingly difficult.

It records a real Stripe billing lifecycle once and replays it offline through your application's actual webhook route, including signature verification and real listeners.

It can replay trial expiration, failed payments, retries, cancellation and resubscription in about a second.

It also tests duplicate and out-of-order webhook delivery.

No Stripe account, API keys in CI, or network access during replay.

It's MIT licensed and currently supports Laravel 11–13.

GitHub: https://github.com/impruthvi/cashier-dunning

I'd especially appreciate feedback from anyone running Stripe/Cashier in production. What billing edge cases would you want something like this to test?

Secretive DHS 'Predictive Policing' Unit Is Analyzing Americans' Financial Habits, Pulling Them Over

By: BeauHD
8 September 2026 at 10:00
An anonymous reader quotes a report from 404 Media: Border Patrol is running secretive predictive policing units that analyze Americans' financial activity and other data, then feed that intelligence to local police who pull people over who are not suspected of any specific crime, but which the government thinks may be worth searching, 404 Media has found. The units, the name of which 404 Media is revealing here for the first time, are called Predictive Intelligence Targeting Teams (PITT). In one case, a PITT analyzed the financial activity of a man who was driving across Montana, and local authorities stopped him under the pretense of an obstructed license plate and charged him with a DUI. 404 Media identified one PITT in the Spokane Sector, Washington, which polices the U.S. border with Canada, and another in the Laredo Sector, Texas, which polices the border with Mexico. The findings add to an Associated Press investigation from last year which found Border Patrol was using automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) as part of the same wide-spanning predictive policing program. "The bottom line is genuine probable cause cannot be synthetically generated," Jake Laperruque, deputy director of the Security and Surveillance Project at the Center For Democracy & Technology, told 404 Media in an email. Here Border Patrol seems to be "using parallel construction to cloak the reason behind its car stops in secrecy. If we can't meaningfully review and evaluate these systems, we can't trust them," he added. [...] The DHS document obtained by 404 Media shows that Border Patrol is analyzing the financial activity of Americans to find people to pull over. The Associated Press's investigation found the predictive policing program is also heavily using ALPRs to track potential targets' movements. It is not clear how exactly Border Patrol is monitoring Americans' financial activity. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) declined to answer what financial activity the agency was monitoring, and whether it obtained a warrant or not. A CBP spokesperson told 404 Media in an email: "U.S. Border Patrol uses intelligence-informed analysis and planning to support national security operations, allocate resources, and help identify potential threats and bad actors to public safety. These efforts are conducted consistent with applicable law, policy, privacy protections, and oversight requirements." The statement continued: "For operational security reasons, we do not discuss specific analytical methods, data sources, targeting criteria, investigative techniques, system capabilities, or deployment details. Public disclosure of such information could compromise law enforcement operations and investigations as well as creating safety risks for agents and the public." Rob Frommer, senior attorney at the Institute for Justice, told 404 Media: "The government's increasing use of mass surveillance -- whether that surveillance comes via ALPRs, financial records, or the like -- coupled with predictive policing is a recipe for tyranny. We fought a revolution for the idea that we are citizens, not subjects. Yet schemes like CBP's Predictive Intelligence Targeting Team treat all Americans as if they are potential suspects. This is not just wrong, it's unconstitutional, and IJ will keep pushing courts and Congress to end this attack on Americans' security."

I built Phphone: Full PHP 8.4 runtime and CLI for Android and iOS

Hi Reddit, I built Phphone, an open-source mobile runtime and anti-framework designed to run full PHP 8.4 directly on mobile devices with zero mandatory cloud dependencies. Instead of writing apps in Dart (Flutter) or relying on heavy JavaScript runtimes (React Native), Phphone embeds the complete Zend Engine into a lightweight native C++ chassis, fully functional across both Android and iOS. Architecture & Low-Level Highlights: Full Native Binaries: Cross-compiled PHP 8.4 (dynamic library on Android, static library on iOS) paired with embedded SQLite3, full libcurl, and OpenSSL. It supports standard PHP libraries, outgoing HTTPS calls, and complex local data pipelines right out of the box. IP Protection (AES-256): To prevent source code extraction from decompilation, all application files in src/ are cryptographically encrypted using AES-256 derived from the project's build keystore. Decryption occurs on-the-fly directly in memory inside the C++ runtime. Hardware-Accelerated UI: The frontend runs inside the platform's native hardware-accelerated WebView over an in-memory micro-server loop (localhost), guaranteeing smooth 60 FPS transitions via standard HTML/CSS/JS. Minimal Footprint: Base Android APK is ~19MB with near-zero idle CPU usage and low RAM consumption. Cross-Platform Ready: Full Android and iOS support is completed. The CLI toolchain automates local scaffolding and builds for both platforms, and our first production app is currently queued for release on both Google Play and the iOS App Store. Live APK Demos Available: To demonstrate that this is a production-ready application engine and not just a theoretical experiment, the website hosts 3 pre-built APKs you can download and test: System & Hardware Demo: A showcase app interacting directly with 14+ native phone APIs and sensors, plus an interactive gradient generator. 2D Gaming Demo: A high-performance 2D game running on PixiJS, powered by local logic. 3D Gaming Demo: A fully interactive 3D scene built with Babylon.js, demonstrating hardware-accelerated WebGL graphics backed by the native PHP engine. Whether for enterprise offline-first software, edge compute nodes, multimedia apps, or 2D/3D games, Phphone proves that modern PHP and standard web technologies can build fast, sovereign mobile apps. Documentation, CLI & APK Downloads: https://phphone.xyz I’d love to hear your thoughts on the low-level C++ embedding, binary optimizations, or the anti-framework approach to mobile architecture.

Where can I host a site that I will basically only need to have hosted for a week or less (PHP) ?

I'm working on my thesis and I have to host my site and get a HTTPS certificate for it. My thesis defense is before the end of the month and after that I can basically stop hosting it because it wouldn't be needed anymore. There will be no traffic or real users. I'm not using a framework either.

Since I need it for such a short amount of time I thought it would be wasteful to spend money. I've been looking for options but from what I've read most are sketchy, don't support PHP, don't support PHPmailer, or you have to purchase the certificate separately anyways.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I've never hosted a site before since we've always relied on XAMPP
