Did you remove your useMemo calls after turning on the React Compiler?

A few months ago I wrote about the React Compiler, and my advice for existing code was to leave useMemo and useCallback alone at first, then clean them up slowly, with tests, once the compiler has been running for a while.

I'm curious how that went for people who actually did it.

The public numbers I found are from InfoQ's write-up: Sanity saw 20-30% less render time and latency on their Studio packages (1,231 of 1,411 components compiled on the first pass), and Wakelet's INP went from 275ms to 240ms.

If you're running it in production, did you rip out the manual memoization? Did anything break?

Señors at Scale Newsletter Edition #34: CSS-Tricks is independent again, Design systems should be fast by default, TanStack Redact | Reylo, Joy Inc.

I write a weekly newsletter for senior frontend engineers. The picks for this week:

- CSS-Tricks has a new owner and is independent again after 12 years. Geoff Graham made the announcement, and Mat Marquis wrote about what it looked like from inside DigitalOcean.

- Design systems should be fast by default: Den Odell opened the same 249-country dropdown in ten popular design systems. One opens in 61ms, another in 1,266ms.

- TanStack Redact: a smaller replacement for React and React DOM in the browser. Tanner Linsley says it cut a sample Vite app's client bundle by 70% without changing app code.

- Reylo by Colin McDonnell (creator of Zod): import a .sql file into TypeScript and get the query types from a live database, no codegen step.
