TIL that the famous 'London Fog' of Victorian novels wasn't natural weather. It was toxic industrial pea-soup smog created by burning soft bituminous coal. In December 1952, the Great Smog of London became so thick that movie theaters closed because the screen wasn't visible from the fourth row.

TIL in 1973, a 2-man submarine laying cables became entangled and trapped 1,575 feet deep in the Atlantic. An international rescue effort brought the men to the surface after more than three days, with only minutes of air remaining. It remains the deepest successful underwater rescue in history.
