[PROMO] Why is there no native Carousel in WordPress Gutenberg? (And how I built the closest thing to a Core feature)

If you work with WordPress Gutenberg and Full Site Editing (FSE), you've probably asked yourself this exact question at some point:

"Why doesn't WordPress have a native Carousel / Slider block built into Core?"

WordPress has given us native block layouts, flex controls, theme.json, and dynamic Query Loops. Yet, the moment you need a simple image slider, a testimonial carousel, or a WooCommerce product carousel, you are forced to install third-party plugins that load 140KB+ of Swiper.js/Slick scripts and inject custom proprietary blocks into your site.

As a WordPress developer, I asked myself a different question:

"If the WordPress Core Team decided to add a native carousel feature to Gutenberg tomorrow, HOW would they build it?"

What a true "Native" Carousel should look like

If WordPress Core included a carousel feature, they wouldn't force you to build custom slider wrapper blocks. Instead, they would extend the native blocks you ALREADY use:

  • Extend existing core blocks: Add a simple "Carousel" toggle switch to standard core/group, core/gallery, and core/query blocks.
  • Use browser native CSS: Use modern CSS scroll-snap handled directly by the GPU, instead of importing heavy third-party JavaScript libraries.
  • Zero technical debt: If you turn off the feature, your content shouldn't break into "Invalid Block" errors—it should gracefully degrade back to a standard native block grid.

Because this feature didn't exist in Core, I decided to build it myself. That's why I created Any Block Carousel Slider (originally named native-blocks-carousel).

How it works under the hood

Instead of creating a new block type that you have to maintain, the plugin acts as a lightweight progressive enhancement layer:

  • Query Loop Carousels in 1 Click: You insert a standard Query Loop block (for blog posts or WooCommerce products), toggle "Carousel" in the sidebar, and it instantly transforms into a smooth carousel. When you publish a new post, it automatically joins the slider!
  • 100% Native Block Markup: Your HTML remains clean WordPress core block markup. Global theme.json variables and styles inherit automatically.
  • 0 External JS Libraries: Powered by native browser CSS scroll-snap + a tiny navigation script (<15KB), preserving 100/100 Lighthouse performance scores.

The Verdict

Until WordPress Core introduces an official native carousel setting, we shouldn't have to sacrifice site speed, maintenance, or native block workflows for simple horizontal scrolling.

I built this tool to bridge that gap giving WordPress developers a solution that feels as close to a native Core feature as possible.

Try the "Native" Carousel Experience

What are your thoughts? Should WordPress Core include a native carousel toggle in future releases?
