Built a 1,000+ listing directory on WP with a hand-coded theme. No page builder, 5 active plugins

I kept reading that you can't run a big directory site on WordPress without a heavy theme, a page builder, and 30 plugins. So here's the counterexample I built.

It's a wedding directory for San Diego. 1,000+ venue and vendor listings, cost guides, planning dashboards for couples. The technical setup:

  • Hand-coded theme, vanilla PHP/CSS/JS. No page builder, no jQuery, no Font Awesome, no Google Fonts.
  • Custom post types for venues and vendors, built as parallel structures with shared code instead of forked templates.
  • Custom taxonomies driving all the category and location filtering.
  • All design tokens (colors, spacing, type) live in one foundation.css. Site-wide restyles are one-file edits.
  • Custom icon font instead of an icon library.
  • Images resized to actual pixel dimensions and served as WebP at the edge by the host. No compression plugins.
  • 5 plugins installed, only three 3rd party (RankMath, Updraft & FluentSMTP), plus two custom ones I built for the directory itself.

Results: 1,400+ pages indexed by Google, Lighthouse 100/100/100/100 on desktop and 97/100/100/100 on mobile.

The thing that made the biggest difference was treating WordPress as a plain CMS and refusing every "just install a plugin for that" moment. Almost everything a directory plugin does is a custom post type, a taxonomy, and a query.

Free site, no ads, no paid listings. Happy to answer questions about performance or structure.
