FBI Arrests Saudi OpenAI Employee For Planting Recording Device In Conference Room

An anonymous reader quotes a report from CNBC: An OpenAI employee was arrested after a "sophisticated recording device" was found hidden inside the executive conference room. Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, who is a national of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, was arrested in connection with the matter, the DOJ said. The company said an employee planted the device a few days before it was found, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation "moved quickly to make an arrest," the post said. The employee was terminated. FBI Director Kash Patel said in a statement that Alfozan "allegedly concealed a covert recording device inside his employer's executive conference room to secretly capture sensitive communications about the company's super intelligence technology." Alfozan is also listed as a partner at Raed Ventures, a venture capital firm that focuses on the Middle East and North Africa, according to its website. The firm announced on Feb. 6, 2025, that H.H. Prince Khalid Bin Bader Al Saud, a member of the Saudi royal family, had joined the firm as a venture partner. Alfozan was announced as a venture partner two days later. The Raed announcement for Alfozan lists Meta, Microsoft and SAP as previous roles and said he studied computer science and engineering at MIT. "At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data," OpenAI said in the post. "We take protecting our technology, data and people seriously, and as a matter of national importance."

GTA 6 Is Reportedly Coming to PC In Early 2027

GamesBeat reports that Rockstar plans to release Grand Theft Auto VI on PC in the first quarter of 2027, just a few months after its November 19, 2026 launch on consoles. The report follows Microsoft's announcement last week that it had secured exclusive cloud-streaming rights to the game. Since Rockstar has yet to officially announce a PC version, "this deal will allow Xbox to market its Xbox Cloud Gaming service to PC players who would otherwise need an Xbox Series X / S or PS5 console," The Verge reported at the time. GamesBeat reports: The Q1 2027 PC release window for GTA VI comes only a few months after the game's November 2026 console launch, representing a significantly quicker turnaround for PC development than the previous iteration of Grand Theft Auto, whose April 2015 PC release came roughly a year and seven months after the September 2013 release of Grand Theft Auto V. The user base of Grand Theft Auto V skews largely towards console players, with PC players representing a small minority. With GTA VI's production budget rumored to exceed $2 billion, Rockstar is highly incentivized to pull all the levers it can as fast as it can to monetize the game's upcoming sequel -- and PC players represent a significant expansion of the GTA VI audience. The potential benefits of launching GTA VI relatively quickly on PC go beyond the opportunity to grow the game's casual player base. Rockstar has signaled its plans to implement user-generated content creation tools into GTA VI, and the company's August 2023 acquisition of Cfx.re, the development team behind the prominent Grand Theft Auto V roleplaying server company FiveM, made it clear that Rockstar considers online roleplaying in GTA to be a factor in the game's future.

Tiny local businesses don't want a CRM. Here's what they asked for instead, after hundreds of calls.

I spent months cold calling local service businesses (trades, salons, small restaurants). Originally I was selling websites, but the conversations kept drifting into how they track customers.

What I heard over and over: - Their "CRM" is a notebook, a phone's recent calls list, or the owner's memory. - They've tried real CRMs. Most quit within weeks because setup felt like a second job. - What they actually want to know is simple: did more people call this month, where did they come from, and what should I do next to get more?

That pushed me to build something much lighter, mostly tracking calls and Google listing views and turning it into a short weekly to-do list, rather than a pipeline tool. (I'm the founder of that, not linking it here.)

Question for the CRM folks: for a one- to five-person business, what's the minimum version of "customer tracking" that actually sticks? Have you seen any setup an owner keeps using past month two?

Disney Offers $20 Million For Character.AI Assets As Startup Files For Bankruptcy

Character.AI has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and plans to sell substantially all of its assets, with Disney offering $20 million as a "stalking-horse bidder" for select intellectual property and company claims. However, the company said Disney's bid is subject to "higher or better offers." Deadline reports: The company, which allows users to create and interact with AI-generated avatars, said it made the filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. It said it hopes the process will allow it to "facilitate a value-maximizing sale of all or substantially all" of its assets. The Character.AI platform will continue to operate during the bankruptcy. The Disney agreement, reached prior to the filing, would give the media giant a non-exclusive perpetual license of select intellectual property and company claims from Character.AI. Disney would pay $20 million and provide resources during a transition period as the company explores a sale. [...] Character.AI said it is aiming to conclude the sale process by late November or early December. Character.AI has faced a series of controversies over the past year or so. Most notably, the company settled multiple lawsuits alleging its chatbots encouraged self-harm and suicide among teenagers, including a high-profile case involving 14-year-old Sewell Setzer III. The company also faces lawsuits from Kentucky, which alleges its chatbots encouraged self-harm, and Pennsylvania, which claims the bots illegally impersonated licensed doctors. The latter allegations follow earlier complaints that Character.AI's therapy chatbots engaged in the unlicensed practice of medicine. In September 2025, Disney accused Character.AI of copyright infringement and using its characters in chatbots that were "sexually exploitive and otherwise harmful and dangerous to children," prompting their removal from the platform. These mounting legal challenges and regulatory scrutiny ultimately contributed to this eventual bankruptcy filing.

Kroger to Lay Off 3,000 Corporate Employees In AI Restructuring

Kroger says it will cut 3,000 corporate jobs over the next three years as it expands its use of AI and other technology to streamline operations. "Technology is reshaping what's possible," CEO Greg Foran wrote in a memo to employees on Monday. "The way work gets done is changing across every industry; we must adapt and take advantage of technology. We need to adopt capabilities, reduce duplicative work and look closely at where work is best fit to be done." ABC News reports: Kroger last month outlined its AI strategy, meant "to improve the customer experience, make work easier for associates and produce better business outcomes." Cincinnati-based Kroger is the largest standalone U.S. supermarket chain with 409,000 employees and more than 2,700 stores operating under various brands, including Ralphs, King Soopers, Smith's and Fred Meyer. Kroger named former Walmart executive Foran CEO in February, 11 months after the abrupt resignation of its previous CEO. Foran has a reputation for being tech-savvy and detail-oriented. He led Walmart's U.S. division from 2014 to 2019, where he focused on cleaning up stores, ensuring items were in stock and improving the fresh produce selection. He also introduced online ordering and pickup, and accelerated Walmart's digital capabilities.

[PROMO] I got tired of installing four plugins on every build, so I spent the past 6 months creating one that does all four

Every site I build starts the same way. A field plugin, a form plugin, an SEO plugin, and then four or five one-trick utilities for the things WordPress does not do by itself. Four admin menus, four sets of conventions, four things to keep updated.

So I wrote one plugin that does those four. It is free on wordpress.org and it is called Ultivo Toolkit.

What is in the free version:

  • Custom fields. Visual builder, location rules, 33 field types including repeater. Stores data in exactly the same meta pattern as ACF, so existing field data keeps working and there is a migration tool for field groups and acf-json.
  • Forms. Drag and drop builder, entries in the admin, notifications, file uploads outside the media library, optional spam protection.
  • SEO. Title and description templates, Open Graph, sitemap. It prints nothing at all while Yoast, Rank Math or AIOSEO is active, so you can install it next to what you already run.
  • Seventeen switches for the usual chores: duplicate posts, SVG and AVIF uploads, a custom login URL, manual content ordering, limit login attempts, redirects with a 404 log, SMTP, admin menu organiser. All off by default.

It needs WordPress 6.0 and PHP 7.4, so it should install on just about anything you still maintain.

Three things I would want to know if someone posted this at me:

Is it heavy? Each of the four parts can be switched off, and when it is off it registers nothing: no menus, no screens, no hooks, no queries. Measured on a stock install, the whole thing adds eight queries to a front end page.

What if I uninstall it? Your content stays. Field values go into ordinary post meta, the same shape ACF uses: client holds the value, _client remembers which field it came from. Delete the plugin and those rows are still on your posts, and get_post_meta() still returns them. Nothing is kept in a table of its own, and nothing is cleaned up on uninstall. You lose the builder, not the content. That is also why you can leave ACF switched on while you try this: it never switches off a plugin from someone else, it just points out where the two overlap and lets you decide.

Where is the catch? There is a paid version. Pro adds Blueprints (export your post types, taxonomies, field groups and forms to a file and import them on another site), Flexible Content and the Clone field, and it starts at $49 a year for one site. Everything I listed above is in the free version and stays there, including repeater, options pages and the ACF migration. Nothing is sent to us, ever. Two features do reach an outside service: spam protection if you switch it on, and the map preview in the admin.

It went into the directory five weeks ago and has had six releases since, so it is new and barely used, but it is not parked. That is exactly why I am posting. If you build sites for a living I would rather hear what is missing than get a download: what would stop you switching?

Question about WPML v5 changes and marketing practices

https://preview.redd.it/k3fqazen1avh1.png?width=1536&format=png&auto=webp&s=b8c3fc2e55c681c45dcbb2721bf8f085943a7bcf

#WPML

Hi everyone,

I'd be interested in your opinion concerning the evolution of WPML v5.

****** This post was not to open a debate about translation plugins, so thanks in advance to do not start a debate to compare WPML with other solutions. ******

WPML Marketing Strategy:
I'm really upset that with the BIG update, they have put Automatic Translation with PTC by default, even on website that had never been translated with ATE, or even the Classic Translation Editor. I manage many websites, and I'll have to reconfigure WPML settoings on all of them and explain my client that this had to be done because of WPML, which they don't even know what it's about !

UX:
I understand that this is a first version, but hey, how come WPML made all those settings in TABS instead toggles or accordions ? Is feels like back in 2000.

Support:
Robots seems to be your support. I guess that if the robot fails to help, it will go to a human, but after how many chats ? I don't know yet !
That said, from what I tried, there robots seem not that bad, but I haven't had very difficult case for now. Did you ?

"Community":
Before, when you needed support, you could go in the "support section", type what your problem was, and before everything, it was showing you a forum with real cases with real people. It was not made to be a community, but there was something human.
All is gone ! No more forums !

https://preview.redd.it/k3fqazen1avh1.png?width=1536&format=png&auto=webp&s=b8c3fc2e55c681c45dcbb2721bf8f085943a7bcf

So, I was asking myself if I was the only one feeling that way with WPML, which I've been using for more that 13 years.

And as the only thing I found was a Reddit group for WPML with 2 users and not active for 2 years, I thought I'd have more feedback here ! ;-)

So, what's your experience / opinion ?

Cart loading nightmare, help!

Hey guys, first time posting here. I'm redoing my site and for some reason now the cart has this horrible page populating issue where giant black boxes appear while the page is loading. Sometimes they go away in about .5 seconds or so, but a lot of times, you have to refresh the page to make them disappear. The overlay boxes are different every time. I'm attaching a few photos for reference. They always seem to frame a subsection, image or text. I'm wondering if anyone's had the same issue or knows a fix for this.

For what it's worth, my site is built with Wordpress , and hosted on Hostinger. Payment processing, licensing and products are handled by Woo. I've added a lot of customizations and Woo overrides to the cart because the stock Woo cart is heinous to look at. Any help is appreciated, thanks :)

Shopify has won the top of the web and WooCommerce has won everything below it

Shopify and WooCommerce aren't competing for the same part of the web any more. Shopify has taken the top of it and WooCommerce has everything below, so both of them can fairly call themselves the biggest platform.

I think that explains why the figures that people publish never agree with each other. Elementor, Hostinger and WPBeginner quote numbers 4x apart, because each of them measured a different slice of the internet and none of them said which.

WooCommerce has also started falling. It lost three years of growth in the last 12 months while Shopify hit an all-time high - on the current trajectory, Shopify will overtake outright around the end of 2027.

I've written everything up, including the data, at: https://barn2.com/blog/shopify-vs-woocommerce-market-share/

Ledger Confirms Spy Chip Implant Behind Wallet Crypto Thefts

Longtime Slashdot reader AmiMoJo shares a report from BleepingComputer: Ledger has confirmed that some of its devices distributed through Southeast Asian reseller CryptoBilis were compromised with a hardware implant that drained users' cryptocurrency wallets. The company has been investigating reports of users losing funds from wallets purchased through CryptoBilis, a major Malaysia-based hardware wallet retailer operating across Southeast Asia. Some researchers have shown the implant in Ledger X since September 16, saying tampered devices were available for nearly half the price of the original hardware. [...] In a report over the weekend, Tibane Labs notes that the threat actor made room for the malicious circuitry by replacing the original battery with a smaller one, which powers both the implant and the Ledger X. "Under the battery and antenna sits an ST STM32G431KBU6 (Arm CortexM4, 128 KB flash, UFQFPN32)," the researchers found inside one of the devices. For connectivity, the actor used "a tiny eSIM, an 8pad package just 2x2 mm, next to the MCU, and a shielded LTE module that sends the words out." [...] Ledger is advising users to avoid purchasing from unauthorized resellers as they run an increased risk of getting counterfeit or modified devices. The company is also reminding its authorized resellers and distributors to get the products only through authorized channels and to avoid restocking returned products. Ledger provides a 'Genuine Check' mechanism to determine the authenticity of the device; however, it explicitly warns that it cannot detect added implants when the device's original Secure Element remains intact.

Anthropic Bans Cruelty Toward Claude

New submitter CubicleZombie writes: Anthropic has updated its Usage Policy to prohibit "sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior" toward its Claude AI models. While ordinary frustration, criticism, and adversarial testing remain acceptable, repeated cruelty could result in account restrictions. Anthropic acknowledges there's no evidence Claude can suffer but argues that uncertainty about AI consciousness warrants precaution. Critics contend the policy anthropomorphizes software, encourages unhealthy emotional attachments, and raises questions about how customers may interact with products they've paid for. The move raises an intriguing question: If an AI cannot demonstrably experience suffering, is abusing it an ethical problem, or is Anthropic simply policing human behavior?

Google Launches Flagship AI Model Gemini 4 Argon

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Reuters: Alphabet's Google on Wednesday released its flagship AI model Gemini 4 Argon to developers and businesses worldwide, seeking to regain ground against rivals OpenAI and Anthropic after months of delays and a leadership shakeup at its DeepMind lab. The model excels at "deep work" on complex, multi-step tasks in coding, finance, law, cybersecurity and science, Google said. API pricing at launch starts at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, with rates set to double after November 30. [...] Argon is available to paying customers through the company's AI application building tools. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can access it through the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search, while the Antigravity coding tool is limited to Ultra subscribers. Teams using Argon in Antigravity increased agentic code submissions by more than 35%, while reducing code rollbacks by nearly a third, Google said. Google also announced the expansion of its Fairwind Program to hundreds of additional partners. "The program gives vetted cybersecurity defenders a version of Argon without its cyber guardrails," reports Reuters. "In September, the company had said it was providing the model to select cybersecurity partners."

What's your 'Thank God, I don't have to do this' moment with AI's help?

I recently ask it to:

  • delete 665 unused photos in media lib. And It checks and knows what's unused.
  • generate webp photos manually, no plugins needed. It's one-time job
  • install + setup site A->Z in one prompt. I used to do it manually: install, ssl, dns etc.

Everytime, I was like 🙄 why on earth I did those things by hand, for many years.
