Vibing Drupal - My Tips and Tricks for 10x Drupal Development using AI

Vibing Drupal - My Tips and Tricks for 10x Drupal Development using AI

Here are my tips and tricks, highlighting those that can 2x productivity and lead you toward 10x productivity and beyond. I hope you'll scan or read this list, take something away, and keep up with our fast-moving times.

Below is a summary of the key tips that can help you reach 10x productivity

  • Harnesses: Use a desktop harness with an integrated browser so you can see what the AI sees and thinks.
  • Agent Skills: Capture any repeatable task or process in a skill, and have the agent refine it after each session.
  • Plans: Default to plan mode so you can review what the agent will do before it changes code and eats tokens.
  • CLI/Scripts: Have agents create and maintain custom CLI scripts, like a DDEV command that installs Drupal with the recipes you need.
  • Worktrees: Combine Git worktrees with DDEV to run multiple agents on multiple tasks in the same project.
  • Contribution: Use the Drupal.org CLI so an agent can create an issue, fork, and MR in minutes.
  • Drush: Have agents write custom Drush commands that expose the data and operations they keep needing.
  • Ask: Ask the AI to explain what it did and why, and use it as a learning tool before it does things for you.

Vibing Drupal: Using AI to switch between multiple versions of Drupal core

Vibing Drupal: Using AI to switch between multiple versions of Drupal core

With Drupal 12 on the horizon and Drupal 10 reaching end of life in December, I'm facing two challenges. First, I need to upgrade my current site from Drupal 10 to Drupal 11. Second, I need to update my contributed modules to support Drupal 12, while still supporting Drupal 10.

To address these challenges, I’m experimenting with an AI agent skill and a corresponding DDEV command, drupal-core-switcher, that toggles my application between the previous, current, and next versions of Drupal core and compatible contributed modules.

Are you facing similar challenges? Is having a drupal-core-switcher skill and command helpful? If you are procrastinating on upgrading to Drupal 11, would you use AI to help you do it?

Vibing Drupal: Tale 3 - Using AI to contribute code by planting it in someone else’s module

Vibing Drupal: Tale 3 - Using AI to contribute code by planting it in someone else’s module

My take is that contributing to and growing an open-source project is easier with AI than without it. Still, while working on the Webform module's security issues, I was terrified that a single AI-generated misstep would draw vitriol.

Let's talk about our Drupal gardens and engage in an open dialogue among those who are AI-pilled, AI-curious, and AI-cautious.

Running with scissors: Using AI to explore, build, maintain, contribute, and secure Drupal

Running with scissors: Using AI to explore, build, maintain, contribute, and secure Drupal

"Running with scissors: Using AI to explore, build, maintain, contribute, and secure Drupal" is the title of my DrupalCon Orlando session proposal. I've been using and writing about AI as a Drupal developer for the past year, and I look forward to sharing my experience with fellow Drupalers at the conference. There is so much discussion about AI and Drupal, and I'd like your help with my DrupalCon session proposal.

What questions or concerns should I explore? What would you like to take away from a presentation on AI for Drupal developers?

Vibing Drupal: Tale 2 - Using AI to maintain a module, exploring the AI-possible

Vibing Drupal: Tale 2 - Using AI to maintain a module, exploring the AI-possible

Adopting AI can feel overwhelming, so I am sharing a few tales from my experience creating, maintaining, and assisting with contributed Drupal modules. AI can do a decent job of building a "greenfield" Drupal module from scratch, so my first tale is about using AI to build and contribute a module. For my next tale, I want to talk about using AI to maintain an existing "brownfield" Drupal module and to explore what is possible with AI.

Do you fall into the AI-possible camp, the AI-cautious camp, or somewhere in between?

Vibing Drupal: What’s your take on the /grill-me skill?

Vibing Drupal: What’s your take on the /grill-me skill?

I started experimenting with one of the most popular agent skills, /grill-me by Matt Pocock, which proved to be a game-changer.

What’s your take on the /grill-me skill? Do you see /grill-me as a game-changer for working with AI and Drupal to learn new things and solve challenging problems?

Vibing Drupal: Tale 1 - Using AI to build and contribute a module

Vibing Drupal: Tale 1 - Using AI to build and contribute a module

Where are you in your AI journey when it comes to building a Drupal module? Have you tried it? Are you ready to try it? Would you contribute an AI-generated module back to Drupal?

I'm going to tell three tales about building, maintaining, and contributing to different Drupal modules. My first tale is about using AI to build and contribute to a module. My second tale will be about maintaining a module. My last tale will be about contributing to someone else's module.

Vibing Drupal: Using AI to hammer at the Webform module's security issues

Vibing Drupal: Using AI to hammer at the Webform module's security issues

Everyone using the Webform module for Drupal should update to the latest version to mitigate 20+ security vulnerabilities.

AI has made it easier to find and exploit security vulnerabilities, while also making it easier to organize, review, and fix security issues. As the maintainer of the Webform module, I felt it was time to address all known Webform security issues, using Codex to organize, test, and assist with each one. I found AI to be the most effective way to address issues that had been unresolved for four years. The experience felt like using AI to hammer at the Webform module's security issues.

Vibing Drupal: Losing my skills

Vibing Drupal: Losing my skills

I know this blog post's title implies losing my (programming) skills, and I will gladly address my feelings about how agentic coding has caused my problem-solving and coding to atrophy from lack of use. The main focus of this post is about losing, specifically deleting, my overly verbose and complicated skills and AGENTS.md files.

Do you feel you are losing your coding skills when working with a coding agent, or do you see other skills emerging as you experiment with AI?
