Ukraine's Drone Strikes Spur Hasty Russian Plans For Underground Data Centers

By: BeauHD

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Ars Technica: [S]tate-owned telecommunications company Rostelcom has raised the possibility of moving some Russian data centers underground in talks with the nickel and palladium mining company Norilsk, according to Russian newspaper Vedomosti. The industry publication Data Center Dynamics also pointed to a recent proposal by a Russian regional governor to build data centers within open-pit coal mines while planting green public parks above as camouflage. On November 2, Putin also signed a decree ordering Russian data center operators to set aside 10 percent of available space and capacity in case the Russian government requires it, according to independent Russian news publication Meduza. That may indicate growing Kremlin concerns about the vulnerability of Russian cloud computing infrastructure during its war with Ukraine. Putin's decree also allows a special Russian government commission to authorize use of foreign data centers in consultation with Russia's Federal Security Service. That marks a notable policy change because Putin and the Russian parliament previously enacted Russia's "Sovereign Internet Law," which has blocked Russian companies from using cloud computing infrastructure outside Russia's borders. Russia's push for a sovereign and increasingly closed Internet has resulted in a highly centralized system under a few Russian tech companies like Yandex. That hyper-centralized system has now proven vulnerable during wartime, as Ukrainian drone strikes on key Russian data centers created widespread disruptions for popular payment and digital banking apps, e-commerce platforms, video streaming services, and ride-hailing and food delivery apps, among others. Yandex has also been forced to relocate all three of its main supercomputers after Ukrainian drone strikes targeted the AI data centers where they were originally housed, Meduza reported.

Help with posts page for WordPress theme

3 November 2026 at 21:21

I'm hoping this is a simple fix and I'm only confused because I'm new to WordPress. Please help!

I installed a theme called Wedding Photographer Nook because I liked the layout, however I'm having trouble with the way it's set up for the home page and posts page.

I want new posts to go to a seperate page which operates like a blog, but doing this by going to the page I want to set it as the posts page instead removes all the formatting and reformats it to the theme's homepage, which does not display latest posts. In Settings > Reading I try switching the settings around and it doesn't do anything at all.

Basically I just want to remove whatever it is that causes the posts page to reformat into this homepage template the theme has set up so that I can set posts to go to the page I designate.

Looking for a free WordPress booking plugin with manual appointment approval and flexible durations

3 November 2026 at 16:11

Hi everyone!

I'm building a website for my first paying client, a home-based beauty technician who offers nail, eyelash and eyebrow services.

I'm looking for a free WordPress booking plugin that can handle a specific booking workflow.

Here's how I'd like it to work:

  1. My client sets her available days and time slots from her WordPress dashboard.
  2. When someone visits the website, they can see the available time slots and choose one.
  3. The customer selects the services they want (nails, eyelashes, eyebrows, etc.) and submits a booking request.
  4. My client receives a notification and can manually accept or reject the request before it becomes a confirmed appointment.

There's one important detail: appointment durations are not always the same.

For example, a simple nail appointment might take 30 minutes, while a more elaborate design or a combination of services could take 3–4 hours.

Ideally, I'd like a plugin that can handle different appointment durations depending on the selected services, while still allowing my client to manually approve each booking.

My main requirements are:

  • Display available time slots to customers.
  • Allow customers to select one or multiple services.
  • Support variable appointment durations.
  • Keep booking requests pending until manually approved.
  • Allow my client to manage availability and appointments easily from her phone or WordPress dashboard.

I've looked into Simply Schedule Appointments and a few other plugins, but I'm not sure which one supports all these features in its free version.

I'm currently developing the website locally using WordPress and XAMPP, and I'd prefer to avoid paid plugins if possible.

Does anyone have experience with a plugin that can handle this workflow? I'd really appreciate any recommendations or advice!

Thanks!

PSA: Immich Machine Learning has Microsoft Telemetry enabled by default, here's how to disable it

Immich Machine Learning (ghcr.io/immich-app/immich-machine-learning:v3) uses a library called ONNX Runtime, from Microsoft.

This library has telemetry enabled by default, and the Docker build of Immich Machine Learning does not disable it.

I found out about this because my DNS logs were showing thousands and thousands of blocked queries to resolve mobile.events.data.microsoft.com.

I don't think this is acceptable for something that is going to process all my photos, especially since it goes to Microsoft, even if it's anonymised or whatever. The whole point of self hosting is avoiding shit like this.

Mitigations:

Add the environment variable ORT_DISABLE_TELEMETRY=1 to the immich-machine-learning container.

Aditionally, it is good practice to isolate all containers that do not need internet access from the internet. For example, with Docker compose, you can create an isolated network for Immich:

networks: immich-iso: internal: true driver: bridge

Then, on all immich containers:

networks: - immich-iso

Be sure to add your reverse proxy to this network so that it can access the Immich server.

This was reported to the Immich issue tracker in August and they have not addressed it yet.

Our churn review is built entirely from CRM notes

I look after CRM reporting for a B2B SaaS team and I’m putting together our quarterly churn review. CS logs a cancellation reason for every account and there are notes from renewal calls and save attempts. That’s what we use to group the losses and explain them to leadership

For accounts marked low usage, I still want to know what changed in their day to day work and where that work went.

The notes don’t always get that far. We rarely speak to customers again after cancellation so the explanation entered at the time carries straight into the review. Some have been gone for a few months now and I’m struggling to tell how much of the story we ever got

Sharted for the first time at 32

Pictured: the culprit.

I am mortified. Traumatised. I'm a different woman since the incident. I thought it would never happen to me, but it did. At least I was home and alone, but now I fear it will happen when I'm in public. I can never trust a fart ever again. My body betrayed me and I will never recover.
