People as content types

As I’ve been exploring Drupal more and more, it has dawn on me that “Content Types” do not necessarily have to only be public facing things for a site - articles, posts, videos, etc. It occurred to me that I could manage my organization’s roster of members and students by making each its own content type and building Views to display them.

I would appreciate hearing from some of the experienced site builders here about some of the less conventional Content Types you’ve used.

Linking Member and Student content types

I’m trying to transition my local organization’s website over to Drupal, and I was wondering: can I enhance the way we keep track of members and their students? We currently use Sheets for just about everything, but I am wondering if i can have a user fill out a Webform - which then creates nodes about themselves (the Member) and their students (one Student type node for each student). I’ve sort of got this rolling a bit using Webform Content Creation module, but I’m struggling with how to automatically link up the Member and Student nodes. Ideally that linkage would happen automatically, instead of having to manually go in and link them up myself.

Would appreciate any advice or direction.

Make a small, hyperlocal, user discussion forum / trading site

I’m slowly learning and transitioning to Drupal the website of a local organization for which I volunteer. I am wanting to make a user discussion forum component that will also double as a space for people to post muscial instruments for sale or trade. No payments, just connections made. I’m looking at the now contrib Forum module, but it seems to be on the down swing - as are forums in general - but a forum does feel like a nice fit for this use case.

Can anyone provide some perspective or advice on a direction to look at for this? Any thoughts appreciated.

An entirely semantic HTML theme?

Does anyone know if this exists? I know there are some things sprouting up in the new UI components work, like for pico.css. I’m interested in utilizing one of the many tiny “classless” CSS mini-frameworks to design a very simple site for an organization.
