[PROMO] Free WooCommerce plugin for creating custom order workflows β€” looking for community feedback

6 October 2026 at 21:52

I’ve released a free/open-source WooCommerce plugin on WordPress.org called Custom Order Workflow for WooCommerce.

I built it to address a common requirement on WooCommerce projects: the standard WooCommerce order statuses don't always match the actual workflow a business needs.

For example, instead of only:

Pending β†’ Processing β†’ Completed

a store may need something like:

New Order β†’ Review β†’ Approved β†’ Processing β†’ Ready β†’ Completed

The plugin provides a way to create and manage a more customized order workflow within WooCommerce.

πŸ”— WordPress.org:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/iamgsbala-custom-order-workflow-for-woocommerce/

Why I built it

I've worked on several WooCommerce projects where the order process was more complicated than the default statuses. In many cases, the choices were either custom development or adding multiple plugins to handle different parts of the workflow.

I wanted to create a simple, focused solution that could be useful to other WooCommerce site owners and developers as well.

I'm looking for feedback

Since this is still growing, I'd particularly appreciate feedback from the WordPress/WooCommerce community:

  • What custom order statuses do you commonly need?
  • How do you currently handle custom order workflows?
  • Are there workflow transitions you would expect to automate?
  • What integrations or actions would make this more useful?
  • Are there any WooCommerce edge cases I should consider?

I'm the developer of the plugin, so this is a genuine community promotion, and I'm mainly hoping to get feedback from people who work with WooCommerce.

Thanks!

South Korea Says AI Agents May Have Been Used to Hack the Country's Banks

By: BeauHD
6 October 2026 at 22:30
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung says there are signs AI models may have been used in recent cyberattacks against several major banks. "In some hacking incidents, signs have emerged of AI being used, causing considerable public concern and anxiety," Lee said during a cabinet meeting. "Please establish the circumstances swiftly and clearly, and concentrate personnel and resources on minimizing the damage." Reuters reports: South Korea's police have launched a full-scale investigation into the hacking attacks against commercial banks that led to a breach of customers' personal information, the Yonhap news agency reported on Tuesday. Shinhan Bank, KB Kookmin Bank and others had reported cyberattacks, the Financial Services Commission (FSC) said on Friday, while Yonhap reported that Hana Bank and Woori Bank also suffered breaches. Authorities have not yet disclosed details on what kind of AI tools were used in the hacking incidents or the full scale of the breaches. On Sunday, FSC Chairman Lee Eog-weon convened an emergency meeting with financial industry associations, regulators and executives from affected institutions, warning that the sector must respond with the highest level of vigilance. Financial watchdog the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) and the Financial Security Institute shared data about 28 unique IP addresses and some country information linked to the recent hacking attempts with the financial sector, the FSS said on Tuesday.

Our WordPress site got hit by a bot, burning €220 in Google Maps API in 45 minutes. I built a free tool to fix GCP's billing UI trap.

6 October 2026 at 20:34

We were recently working on a WordPress project that relied on the Google Maps API. Out of nowhere, a rogue AI bot hammered the site. Because GCP's billing alerts have a 45-minute latency, we got hit with a €220 bill before we even knew what was happening.

Months of $0.00, and then BAM β€” €220 in April.

While investigating, I realized how predatory Google's UI is. They prompt you to "Enable 15 APIs with one click," but setting actual hard limits requires navigating a confusing maze of quotas. For WP developers handing over sites to clients, this is a massive liability. If a client's site gets scraped, they blame you for the bill.

The alerts arrived too late. The entire free tier and the €220 overage happened in under 45 minutes. (Cue the endless email thread begging Google Support for a refund).

I got so frustrated that I built a free, local browser extension (runs client-side) to fix this. It acts as an overlay on the GCP Console and calculates the exact API Quotas needed to guarantee a $0 bill, stopping requests instantly at the API level.

The extension calculates and sets exact daily quotas for the most heavily used services (Maps JavaScript API and Geocoding API) to mathematically guarantee a $0 monthly bill.

I published it in the Chrome Store for free. https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/free-maps-calculator-for/bempibaijbfokllpdhkjlokmpeokkpkh/

Dropping it here because I know how many WP sites rely on Maps, and you need to protect your clients' billing accounts.

How to make OBS chroma key smarter by using Background Replacement in macOS

If you want to use chroma key effect in a streaming or video conference app, but you can't get a physical green screen background in place, you can fake it. All by using Background Replacement in macOS.

Bearded man wearing Yeah Man shirt in a video recording preview on OBS Studio interface, with large OBS logo overlaid on the left and a desert landscape background
You can do Chroma Key in OBS without a green screen, thanks to macOS.

Whether it is streaming gameplay to Twitch or improving your Zoom calls, sometimes you want to replace the background with something else. It's unprofessional to have a background that includes piles of dirty clothes, random dinner plates, and other unsightly items.

When it comes to using tools like Zoom or FaceTime, you can get around that by blurring the background, or even replace the background with a picture.

Nesting pages on site?

6 October 2026 at 20:13

Hey everyone,

We’re auditing our WordPress site architecture. Right now, our core pages live at the root level (/service-a/, /offering-b/). We considered moving them into a CPT under a subfolder (/services/service-a/), but taking on 301 redirect risk on live, ranking pages just for "cleaner folders" feels like a bad trade-off.

A few quick questions for technical SEOs and WP devs:
Have you seen any real difference in how Google or LLMs understand a site when using physical subfolders vs. flat URLs backed by good Schema and internal links?

If we run a CPT with a root slug (/) to keep URLs flat while organizing our WP dashboard, are there any permalink or query performance bugs we should watch out for?

What specific Schema properties (like hasOfferCatalog or about) have worked best for you when optimizing for search citations?

uGreen NASync DXP6800 Ultra review: Halfway between AI powerhouse and basic NAS

At $1,449.99, six hard drive bays in the uGreen NASync DXP6800 Ultra, coupled with dual 10GbE and Thunderbolt are the real draw, not its AI billing.

uGreen NASync DXP6800 Ultra review

A NAS lives or dies on two things. One is how much it can contain, the other is how fast you can move it.

uGreen's DXP6800 Ultra bets hard on the second. It piles on connectivity that pricier rivals often charge extra for.

What’s your go-to approach when a WordPress site suddenly gets slow?

6 October 2026 at 15:37

I’ve been working with WordPress for a while and one thing I still find interesting is how different the cause of a slow website can be.
Sometimes it’s a plugin, sometimes a poorly optimized theme, database queries, images, hosting, or even third-party scripts.
For those who work with WordPress regularly, what’s usually the first thing you check when a site suddenly becomes slow?
Do you start with PageSpeed/Lighthouse, Query Monitor, server logs, plugins, or something else?
Curious to know how other WordPress developers troubleshoot this.

[PROMO] SecureHold WP: free WooCommerce plugin for Stripe security deposit holds

6 October 2026 at 09:57

Hi everyone,

I’m the developer of the free version of SecureHold WP, an open-source WooCommerce plugin I’ve been working on for businesses that need refundable security deposits.

The basic idea is to keep the normal WooCommerce payment separate from the deposit. Instead of charging the security deposit and refunding it later, the plugin creates a separate Stripe authorization hold.

If everything is fine, the merchant releases the hold. If there’s an issue, the authorized amount can be captured instead.

I originally built it around rental use cases, but the same workflow can be useful for equipment, accommodation, vehicles and other WooCommerce stores where a temporary card authorization is needed.

The free version is available on WordPress.org:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/securehold-security-deposit-holds/

GitHub:

https://github.com/SecureHold/securehold-security-deposit-holds

I’d especially appreciate feedback from WooCommerce developers on the payment flow, edge cases and anything that feels unclear from a merchant’s point of view.

Canadian Analysis: Permanent Daylight Saving Harms Sleep and Mental Health

By: BeauHD
6 October 2026 at 18:00
"With the push to eliminate the twice yearly clock change, Permanent Daylight Savings Time has emerged as the favorite for most states and provinces," writes longtime Slashdot reader kbahey, sharing the findings from a recent analysis published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. Sci.News reports: "Ending the clock change solves one problem, but it creates another decision: which time should we live on year-round?" said University of British Columbia's Professor Raymond Lam, lead author of the study. "The health evidence points to standard time, largely because morning light matters for our body clocks, sleep, and mood." Professor Lam and colleagues examined the health consequences of the two possible permanent systems rather than the broader question of whether seasonal clock changes should be abolished. They concluded that the accumulated evidence favors permanent standard time, which keeps the clock more closely aligned with human circadian biology. This distinction, according to the team, becomes particularly important during winter. Permanent daylight saving time would push sunrise an hour later. In cities such as Toronto, for example, the latest winter sunrise would occur at 8:51 a.m., compared with 7:51 a.m. under permanent standard time. In Calgary, the corresponding times would be 9:40 a.m. and 8:40 a.m. The extra hour of morning darkness could leave people traveling to work or school before sunrise, while shifting more daylight into the evening. The change could have consequences for sleep, mood, learning and productivity, particularly among people who already have difficulty sleeping or who must follow early schedules. The reason is rooted in the body's internal clock. "Our biological clocks need morning light to stay synchronized with the 24-hour day," said Simon Fraser University's Professor Ralph Mistlberger, co-author of the study. "Permanent daylight saving time moves that light an hour later just when winter mornings are already darkest." The analysis also highlights concerns about seasonal depression. [...] By delaying natural morning light, permanent daylight saving time would act in the opposite direction, potentially weakening an important circadian signal.

HubSpot Cuts 660 Jobs In AI Restructuring

By: BeauHD
6 October 2026 at 17:00
HubSpot is cutting about 7% of its workforce, or roughly 660 employees, as it restructures into what CEO Yamini Rangan described as a "flatter organization" with fewer management layers. Rangan said the layoffs were "not driven by AI-related efficiencies," though AI remains central to HubSpot's strategy as the company adjusts its organization around AI-driven customer outcomes. Fast Company reports: The layoffs come as investors have spent months questioning whether AI will reduce the need for businesses to pay for software like HubSpot's, a fear dubbed the "SaaSpocalypse." HubSpot's platform helps companies manage their customers, sales, and marketing. The company was removed from the FTSE All-World Index (USD) last month after a decline in its stock price, a report from Simply Wall St noted. The stock is down more than 43% this year as of this writing. Yamini Rangan, CEO of HubSpot, explicitly told employees in a memo that the layoffs were "not driven by AI-related efficiencies." Rather, the aim was to focus on "aligning our organization with our strategy and how we need to operate going forward," Rangan wrote. She added that the goal is to "build a flatter organization with fewer layers" by cutting back on management. Still, artificial intelligence has been central to the company's concerns. In August, Rangan blamed AI for why the company "got off to a slow start" in April as HubSpot was trying to adjust its product and pricing. "We're in the middle of a real transition to AI, and we are making deliberate choices to lead in it," she said on an earnings call. The restructuring is estimated to cost between $65 and $75 million, mostly in severance packages. The company said that laid-off employees will receive 20 weeks of base pay, one week per year of service (capped at 30 weeks), five months of COBRA and Modern Health healthcare benefits, and they will be allowed to keep their laptops.

An unannounced Apple Home event is expected to take place on October 13 with a new Apple TV, upgraded HomePod mini, and the debut of the long-rumored Apple Home Hub. A new last-minute rumor suggests that additional home accessories could be coming soon to accompany Apple's new home initiatives.

According to a report from Bloomberg, Apple is working with LG to introduce a smart deadbolt lock, an indoor security camera, an outdoor security camera, and a floodlight camera. These will be branded as LG in spite of Apple's involvement, similar to how Apple has co-developed iPhone accessories with other companies previously.

Apple Watch Series 12 is easier to repair, Apple Watch Ultra 4 remains unchanged

A teardown of the Apple Watch Series 12 reveals two repair-friendly changes, but the same can't be said for the Apple Watch Ultra 4 and its internals.

The Apple Watch 4 is as easy (or as difficult) to repair as its predecessor.

With the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra, Apple introduced a revamped health sensing system, better battery life, and a more powerful S11 chip. Design-wise, however, the two models are effectively the same as their predecessors, inside and out.

It's safe to say that Apple used tried-and-true designs, at the expense of potential repairability improvements.

Alexa Can't Control the AUX Input On Amazon Echo Speakers Anymore

By: BeauHD
6 October 2026 at 16:00
Amazon has removed Alexa voice control for the 3.5mm aux input on several older Echo speakers, meaning users can no longer ask Alexa to play or pause audio coming through the wired connection. It's unclear why the feature was removed. The Verge reports: Ars Technica points to this Reddit poster claiming they received a message from Amazon and says an unnamed spokesperson confirmed the change. When contacted by The Verge, Amazon did not provide an on-the-record statement. The message does not include any explanation for why the feature was removed. It also doesn't mention any changes to audio output functionality like connecting an external speaker to an Echo Dot, and it appears that control of the port from within the app's settings menu still works.

WPML / Gravity Forms version mismatch

6 October 2026 at 15:44

I just spent way too much time figuring this out, so maybe this'll help someone out there. I installed the newest version of Gravity Forms Multilingual on my staging site, and translated some new forms I have been working on. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why the translations were not applied to the forms. Later found out they weren't applied to my existing forms anymore, either.

Turns out the newest GF ML plugin isn't compatible with the latest production version of WPML and/or String Translation. I had to update to the beta versions (5.1.0) in order to solve the issue.

Asos Confirms Hackers Sent 'Unauthorized' Notification to App Users

By: BeauHD
6 October 2026 at 15:00
ASOS says hackers gained unauthorized access to third-party platforms it uses and sent an "ASOS HACKED" push notification directly to customers, apparently as part of an extortion attempt. The clothing and beauty store says some basic personal information may have been accessed but does not believe payment-card data or passwords were affected. The BBC reports: In an email to customers on Tuesday night, the company apologized and urged customers not to engage with the notification. And it said the website and app are "operating as usual" promising customers they can "shop with confidence" while it investigates the incident. The company has not as of yet informed the UK's data watchdog, the Information Commission's Office (ICO), about any breach. Exactly how many Asos customers received the notification on Tuesday remains unclear, but Google's Play store says the ASOS app has been downloaded to android devices more than 10 million times. The British retailer has a substantial global footprint -- serving around 17 million customers each year across more than 150 markets. Some Asos app users in Australia, France, Sweden and the Republic of Ireland had also received the notification, according to local reports on Tuesday. [...] Users of the Asos app appeared to have received the alarming notification at around 10:00 BST on Tuesday. Headlined "ASOS HACKED" and addressed to the company's data protection officer and IT teams, it said: "We have fully compromised the Snowflake instance." "Engage with us, or we will leak it," it added, before linking to a Telegram channel. The message left many ASOS customers confused. [...] Meanwhile Snowflake -- whose tools are used by dozens of firms to collect, analyze and store data -- told the BBC its investigation was ongoing, but it had so far found "no compromise" of its platform.

CRM evalaluation

We're a small executive search firm that has all full desk recruiters at it who take on BD, Client mgmt, recruitment, candidate mgmt, etc. We use Bullhorn for our CRM/Database but it is a bit cumbersome for our firm and we're growing more and more frustrated with it's functionality - especially it's search function which we have found to really suck without exhaustive coding of profiles.

We are considering other platforms and leaning to leaner ones and preferably agentic backed. Attio is one platform we're looking into. Would welcome any and all recommendations/thoughts on platforms that you've found to work well as well as the POV on Attio if anyone has used it.

Drupal Theme Issue After Update

Background - I have been maintaining a Drupal site for years, but I am a casual that doesn't really know much. I started on Drupal 8 and survived a migration over to Drupal 10 and switched themes at that point to "Drupal8 W3CSS Sub-theme". I get by but ultimately I don't really know what I am doing.

Today I saw an update to the theme I am using and I foolishly installed it with composer. I now get the error:

Symfony\Component\DependencyInjection\Exception\ServiceNotFoundException: You have requested a non-existent service "Drupal\drupal8_w3css_theme\Hook\Drupal8W3cssThemeHooks". in Drupal\Component\DependencyInjection\Container->get()

Been googling and using AI recommendations for a fix but so far no luck sorting it out. I decided to then install the Solo theme which is the latest generation of W3CSS. I installed it fresh and switched over, and that resulted in the following error instead:

Symfony\Component\DependencyInjection\Exception\ServiceNotFoundException: You have requested a non-existent service "Drupal\solo\Hook\SoloThemePreprocessHooks". in Drupal\Component\DependencyInjection\Container->get(

I have cleared the cache with drush each time and verified that these files do exist where you would expect them to be. I have also used composer to check for outdated components and none are red, although a number are yellow.

If I switch to a completely different theme then my site loads, although it is very malformed, so I am hoping to get one of the above themes working rather than having to do implement a completely new theme.

Any advice for me?
