[DISCUSSION] The consequences of NOT having a free version on WordPress.org

9 September 2026 at 08:04

I have been working on a premium plugin for years and at the beginning of the year I've released it.

And for a few reasons I've deliberately decided NOT to release a free version on .org plugin repository.

Main reasons:
- it's a plugin for WordPress professionals (niche)
- .org review is gatekeeping without responsibility
- awareness of the WP vs WPEngine "drama"
- GPL with all of it's flaws

Of course I was fully aware that this is still the main source of information about plugins for people, but I thought - that I can "offset" it with more marketing/SEO/GEO.

But now after months of grinding and discussing the results with various LLMs - over and over I came to the conclusion that I might have chosen wrong, because .org repository is also one of the main source of information for LLMs.

So now even plugins that have 10-40 installs, few months and less features are recommended more in my "niche" than my plugin.

And I'm now really on the fence. Thinking that maybe I should "surrender" and release a free version ( or at least try to ).

What WordPress 7.1 Actually Changed

20 August 2026 at 14:06

TL;DR

  • WordPress 7.1 added a wp_pre_execute_ability filter that lets any plugin fully short-circuit Abilities API calls (including permission checks).
  • Media Library infinite scrolling is back on by default (reversed since 5.8).
  • Speculative loading still defaults to conservative; new constants let hosts override it instead of the planned auto-detection.
  • Core grew 25% almost entirely from lazy-loaded admin JS (vips + video workers) with no measurable front-end impact.
  • Not a security release - just inherits the 7.0.x fixes.

also - it's the first release that included my fix so now I'm officially Core Contributor :)

"Why is WordPress slow?" breakdown of the typical answers abridged

5 August 2026 at 05:32

I've seen this question asked and answered many, many times. And it seems that the answers depend on who you ask:

- WP Users: "I have no idea... it just is."

- Non-WP Users: "Because it's old/PHP. Use Next/Nuxt/Astro/Webflow/Wix/Ghost/...."

- Theme developers:
"It's plugins or hosting. Or other themes - ours is fast."

- Plugin developers:
"It's theme or hosting. Or other plugins - ours is fast."

- Hosting company: "It's plugins or theme. Or other hostings - come to us we're fast."

- WordPress "Experts": "WordPress powers 43% of the web(...)"

- WordPress Core Performance: "We'd like to make it fast, but we can't make any drastic changes, because someone should be able to run their blog on a solar-powered potato..."

- WordPress Performance Experts: "It's complicated... I can make an audit, it will take around 10h and cost $999"

- WordPress Cache Plugin developers: "It's not if you cache everything!"

- WordPress Performance Plugin developers: "There are many reasons, but our plugin fixes all of them!
*unless it doesn't - then you need to switch hosting"

( yes, it's a satire )
